In 1977 my friend and I rode our motorcycles up and down the West Coast - I have very strong memories of the "State of Jefferson" - we visited an "ice cave" in N. California which was basically a small frozen puddle at the bottom of a long series of steps. Crater Lake is worth a journey. The monstrous slugs living in the cool, damp coastal forests were a little scary! We also camped on a gravel river bed of the Rogue River which was fun and a great place to camp but in hindsight was stupidly dangerous!
I really like this area because of it's lesser population. I lived in Oregon for a bit (Newport and then Corvallis for college) and used to travel down through that area to get to Reno. I also obtained my private pilot's license while in college and loved flying over the area and into Medford.
I spent a lot of time at Mt Lassen, teaching skiing, and also did some backpacking in the southern part of this. One thing many may not know is that the "State of Jefferson" would be one of the safest places in the US in the event of a massive nuclear war, with regard to both targeting and fallout.
I've been to Ashland, OR, and Medford, OR. Medford is the city in area with a real airport and is growing. Beautiful area. Thank you for sharing the complicated geography. Having driven from Oakland to Canada before, I was struck by how different the area was once you got to Mt. Shasta and then to Eugene.
Spent quite a bit of time in Tehama County and this area is indeed beautiful and with a different vibe than the rest of California. I think Jefferson State is a good idea!

Even with all the challenges, count me in. (Former Bay Area and now Central Valley resident. The crazy and the cost here are mounting up.)
