What's next for me and this community
A bigger, bolder direction
For well over a year now, I’ve written an article almost every single week about whatever it is that relates to my Tuesday video over on Geography By Geoff. And, really, that’s it! Nothing more was asked and I simply didn’t have time to prioritize making it into anything bigger. Well, that’s all about to change.
Over the next couple of days, this Substack will look a lot different, have a completely different name, and have a bigger, bolder plan to grow it into the biggest and best geography community on the internet. A place where you can read articles about geography, watch videos about geography, and interact with others who love geography. And this means that all of my content will fold into this singular community page. That includes Geography By Geoff, of course, but also my field geography content over on GeoLex, and a third yet-to-be-announced YouTube channel that we will be launching over the summer.
Which leads me to the first big change here: the name and branding. So, without further ado, welcome to…
Over the next 48 hours this Substack will have a new name (The Bight) and a new url (thebight.co). This has a been in the works for quite a while and, obviously, I’m a big fan. A bight, one of geography’s most nuanced and obscure geographic features, is also a homonym with the word “bite.” Which makes for some fun play on words. But mostly, it’s punchy. It’s memorable. It’s highly geographic. And it’s unique. It allows me to bring everything I create under a single name, something I can’t do with the current name Geographic Geoff.
Basically: there’s so much more in the works right under my umbrella that simply doesn’t live under the Geography By Geoff branding and so, it’s time for something bigger to take over.
As part of this, there will be some big new changes to this Substack but I’m not quite ready to announce what those will be. That announcement will come with the rebrand in a couple days.
That said, I made a promise when I really started writing on this Substack that the weekly articles I’ve been writing for the last couple years will forever remain free. And that’s not changing. Every Wednesday morning, as usual, a fresh geography article, written by me, will be available to everyone who subscribes. You can read and you can comment, just like normal. The branding might be different, but the articles will remain in a similar style and format.
This is a really big year for me. Not least because, later this summer, I’m getting married to someone I truly love and admire. I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Alexa and am so happy we’ve been able to explore and see so much of the world together and share it with you all.
But this is also the year where I’ve grown my company from a single-person scrappy YouTube channel into an actual small media company with actual employees. It’s the year where my main YouTube channel Geography By Geoff will hit 1,000,000 subscribers (currently 998,961 as of this writing!). And it will be the year when I finally get to announce something I’ve been working on since spring of 2024. I don’t want to spoil it but I think you’re all gonna like it. And, definitely not least, this is the year when I truly build something massive here with this community.
So, all this is to say, I hope you stick around with the change. I’ll still be around. I’ll still be writing. I’ll still be creating. But together, we can make something really amazing right here.
Stay tuned!
