Welcome to The Bight
Formerly the Geography By Geoff newsletter
You may have noticed that things are looking a little different this week. What was formerly a newsletter dedicated to my YouTube channel Geography By Geoff, is now a newsletter, community page, and video portal dedicated to geography and travel.
Now, functionally, for those of you who are not looking for anything more or anything to change: not much will. Every week you’ll get an article from me about geography delivered straight to your email. This has been and always will be free for you to read, enjoy and comment on.
But for those of you who want more…
Geography
Travel
Geoff
Alexa
And just more HUMAN-MADE geography content overall
… I’ve got some good news!
Starting today, you’re now able to become a paid subscriber which comes with so many benefits including but not limited to:
Additional subscriber-only articles, community threads, and access to the full archive
The Bight exclusive video content such as behind the scenes stuff from our travels or community rewatches of old Geography By Geoff and GeoLex videos
Ad and sponsor-free Geography By Geoff and GeoLex videos
A free digital download of my exclusive Köppen climate world map (print at home)
But wait!
Don’t click that pay button just yet! Because, to celebrate you reading this, and presumably for being a subscriber already, I’m going to go ahead and gift you a free 30 day subscription. All you have to do is click this button ⬇️
That will give you access to everything above for a full month at which time you can opt to keep being a paid subscriber or simply cancel. I hope you find enough value in what we’re offering to keep that subscription going, but if not, there’s no hard feelings and I’ll certainly enjoy having you around as a free subscriber once again.
Why go paid?
This, of course, is the BIG question. My Geography By Geoff (and GeoLex) newsletters were both free for a long time. It was just a way for me to write a bit more and for the two of us (me and Alexa) to share a bit of our travel adventures. This has been fine because we made enough money on YouTube to support our small, but mighty, little geography-focused media company.
But it’s now 2026. And things are changing… fast. YouTube is more volatile than ever. AI channels, personalities, and content is more pervasive than ever. This has also meant that being an ad and sponsor supported business is shakier than ever.
Unfortunately, the only way for us to be truly sustainable in this new era is to grow beyond YouTube. We’re not leaving that platform, of course, but we can’t depend on it like we used to. And it’s up to us to grow something that is truly our own. A little slice of geography-heaven that we control entirely. A place that is 100% human-made and human-written.
For this reason, we’ve made the decision to double down on creating a dedicated newsletter and community page for all our content and offer it up for a modest monthly fee.
And I get it. We all have subscription fatigue. Especially in this day and age of rising costs… everywhere. But if you do enjoy our content, you’re able to support us monetarily, and, most importantly, you WANT to support us monetarily. Then I hope you’ll help us make something truly cool.
One more thing

Finally, there’s one more thing I want to announce as part of this big change: thebight.store.
As part of this big change to try and be independent and sustain our company and business, I’ve been working like a mad-man designing and creating a bunch of fun merchandise. If you were EVER worried that people didn’t know you were a geography nerd, then I’ve got a few t-shirts that can really help sell that.
Every purchase over on thebight.store helps support us and the human-made content that we make.
So, with that, thank you for reading. Thank you for supporting as either a free subscriber, paid subscriber, or someone who bought some merch. And I look forward to connecting with you all over the coming months much more intentionally and with a renewed focus on building something truly earth-shaking.

I wish you the best of luck with your new endeavor. Fortune Favors The Bold!
