Geography is literally everything

It's true!

Hello and welcome to my new Substack! Now if you’re at all familiar with me (and you probably are because of my YouTube channel), you’ll know that I love geography. In fact it’s basically a core part of my identity. But what I don’t think gets talked about often enough is why I love it so much.

For me, geography is how I view the world. Ever since I was a child, the way my mind worked was in spatial relationships. Perhaps this had something to do with the fact that I moved every year of my life when growing up. Regardless, I saw the connectedness of things from a very yound age. And that lead me to go on to get my bachelors degree in geography, followed by my masters degree in urban planning (which is really just a form of geography). And then to today where I host a semi-popular YouTube channel called: What If Geography, as a companion podcast of the same name with my co-host: Professor Hunter Shobe.

So all that’s to say: geography is fucking everything! That is going to be the theme of this Substack newsletter. I will be sharing:

  • Snippets from my YouTube channel videos (and maybe future full episodes)

  • Podcast episodes

  • General thoughts and ideas about the state of the world through a geographic lens

  • Maps that I make

  • Maps that I like

  • Maps that I don’t like (and I’ll tell you why!)

And so much more.

So if you’re interested in that kind of stuff, subscribe!

I’ll also be leaving Twitter by the end of the year. I’ve attempted to make a go of Twitter, but truthfully, it’s just not my cup of tea. Twitter is also highly reactionary and I just don’t think I do one-liners all that well. Instead I like writing! And this is my new home for that. Nothing will change on the YouTube side of things, so if you like my videos, you can expect many, many more to come.

No plans for paid subscriptions yet, but I’m not ruling it out either. If I can figure out a value-add proposition, I’d like to be able to do more and be more independent.
